Connecting Community Needs with Resources

Education Programs

Neighborhood leaders and residents can help increase resident's level of education in their neighborhoods through offering education initiatives such as building personal assets training and educational assistance and training programs. These programs are categorized according to the area by which they provide services. Organizations may offer different programs in multiple areas. 

 

The main thing to keep in mind is that programs should address one or more of the stated indicators (below).

 

Building Personal Assets Training

This program area mobilizes programs that focus on providing adult trainings on how to increase personal skills and value in areas such as finances, parenting, personal relationships, etc. These types of programs should address indicators such as: 1) Ability to speak English, 2) Aggravated assault-domestic violence, 3) Unemployment, 4) Uninsured<18

 

Educational Assistance and Training

This program area implements programs that help students in areas such as reading, writing, math, science, history or other academic needs. These types of programs should address indicators such as: 1) Ability to speak English, 2) AIMS testing, 3) Aggravated assault-domestic violence, 4) Absent rate, 5) Enrollment, 6) Educational attainment, 7) Non-promotional rate

Don't Borrow Trouble

 

Provides education on predatory lending

 

Don't Borrow Trouble (DBT) mission is to increase the awareness about predatory lending practice in our community through education and outreach. This campaign brings together an extensive public awareness campaign with existing resources to help the borrowers in our community avoid lending scams and resolve their financial difficulties in an informed and prudent manner. Due to the level of foreclosures in our community, foreclosure intervention and prevention is a focus during this time.

MIKID

 

Education and help for families with behaviorally challenged kids

 

MIKID stands for mentally ill kids in distress. MIKID believes that most families are multi-stressed, not dysfunctional. The focus should be on strengths, not the flaws. Planning of services should be a joint effort of family and professionals. MIKID offers support groups, education nights and a resource room full of information on children's issues (ie: Bi polar, ADHD, Autism, Depression etc). MIKID also has parent mentors that can assist families that are facing challenges in school and with their providers. The parent mentor can also help families in finding other resources that they may need to overcome challenges that they are facing.

Tanque Verde Extended Care Program offers excellent ratios and a place where youth can practice, fail and learn. We encourage their development of positive character traits, and build relationships with their families.
